Thankfully, I do not hear it often about me, my agency, or my agency partners. The sad reality is the insurance company doesn’t screw you. The person who set up your policies did. They did not go over what was important you. They did not do a comprehensive review of your coverages. They did not make sure you were covered and covered right.
They may have saved you $200 or $400 but that is not important when you have 6″ of water in your basement and need a new furnace or water heater or when you seriously hurt someone in a car accident or when you lose your wedding ring or when you realize your home deductible is $2,500 and you owe that. Taking 20-30 minutes and making sure you are covered RIGHT is much more important than saving that $200 or $400.
In many cases the person “screwed” wants to save money and the agent wants to help. They do not take a deeper dive into the policy to review things. So when a claim happens and this important coverage you needed was not added the insurance company will send you a letter or call you to let you know your claim is not going to be paid. You never had the coverage in the first place. It was never presented to you. You never had the option to say “No thanks, not at this time.” The company pays claims based off of the coverage you have and what your policy states.
At my agency, our agents will review your policies, make recommendations, and let YOU choose what you want. But you will be educated on why we feel certain coverages are important and what they do for you. Do you have sewer and drain coverage in your basement? Do you have an umbrella policy? How much is it for if you do? Do you have your wedding ring covered under a rider, on your policy, or separately? What is your home deductible?
